Call for Papers - A Sustainable Rural?

Rural communities and economies face unprecedented social and economic challenges and opportunities. Given the scale and nature of these changes and the inherent difficulties and capacity constraints confronting rural communities in addressing them, this conference offers a forum for the dissemination of research findings, analysis and good practice. Networking and discussion will be an integral part of the programme.

The prime focus of this conference will be on sustainable development in this context of change.

It has been argued that: Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), 1987).

Understanding which factors contribute to the valorisation of rural sustainability is often rooted in ´hard´ and ostensibly quantitative performance indicators. National, regional or sub-regional measures of performance are used to indicate the socio-economic health and prosperity of a region or sub-region.

This conference welcomes and invites contributions which apply such techniques and approaches from those who are interested in any aspect of rural sustainability and rural entrepreneurship. However, sustainability is also concerned with realistic and sensible social and economic activity and the ways in which the role of legal, financial, social and behavioural aspects of businesses and communities impact on making rural economies enterprising. Therefore, papers are invited which address and discuss activities and institutions using qualitative and qualitative submissions and other methods of analysis on the main themes or the following sub-themes.

Sub-Themes

  • Rural communities: Professor Gerard McElwee
  • Policy implications: Rural proofing Professor Mike Danson
  • Learning from experience: Innovations David Moyes
  • A sustainable rurality: Professor Gerard McElwee
  • Rural enterprise: Dr Laura Galloway
  • Comparative approaches: Geoff Whittam
  • Home-based rural business: Professor David Deakins

Abstracts of 400 words should be sent to Professor Gerard McElwee, indicating which theme or sub-theme best fits your paper. All papers will be reviewed. Final papers of 2000 words will be required two weeks before the conference.
