United Nations Development Programme

Overview

In India, UNDP implements, in cooperation with the Government and wider civil society, what is emerging as its largest country programme worldwide, currently expected to deliver around US$200 million over the five year period 1997-2001. The activities supported over the years have responded to national priorities in key areas such as technology transfer towards enhancement of industrial productivity, agricultural development, energy and environment, transport and communication and social infrastructure.

In line with the evolving global mandate of UNDP and the new development challenges in India arising from the 1991 economic reforms, UNDP has reoriented its programme to present-day realities. Its new Country Cooperation Framework (CCF-I) for 1997-2001 (concurrent to India's 9th Five Year Plan) emphasizes cross-cutting themes of poverty, employment, environment, women and building an enabling environment for sustainable human development. In support of Governmental national programmes this will be pursued through an integrated approach which encourages national execution, focusing especially on people-centred interventions which promote growth with equity with emphasis on poverty reduction.

The broad programme areas under CCF-I are Employment and Sustainable Livelihoods, Access to Basic Services, Management of Development and Sustainable Development. Specific programme interventions will address Small Industries Development and Employment, Food Security, UN System Support for Primary Education, Health Support, Economic Reforms, Capacity Building in Public Administration, Community-Based Pro-Poor Initiatives, Technology Management, Environment and Rural Energy. To enhance these programmes, efforts would be made, as appropriate, to develop them in a coordinated manner under a common UN System framework, as a follow-up to commitments made at the series of recent UN World Conferences in thematic areas related to human development.
