讲座一:Case Development from Emerging Market Contexts

  基于新兴市场的案例开发

  讲座时间:2009年4月1日(周三)15:00—17:30

摘要:Faculty with access to real world problem contexts in emerging market locations has a unique vantage point into the impact of novel operations management processes. We discuss one example case that was developed with data from an Indian brake lining manufacturer.  The Rane Brake Linings case focused on a Deming Prize winning Indian manufacturing company that produces brake linings for use in the railway and automotive industry. The company provided access to its managers, their presentations and tour of their facilities. The Rane Brake Lining case and its details will be used to discuss how data was gathered, how the case was framed for use in a US classroom and how follow up information was used to embed the case within a teaching context.  A chapter in the book on “Supply Chain Management in Emerging Markets” describes case details. The talk is expected to be a discussion of how such problem contexts can generate effective cases that can be used across the world.

讲座二:From Problem Contexts to Published Research

  从问题背景到文章发表

  讲座时间:2009年4月2日(周四)14:00—17:00

摘要:While the publication of a paper depends on proper matching between the contribution and the target journal, it all starts with an effective generalizable contribution to research.  In this talk I will offer my perspective on applied problem contexts, their impact on model development and analysis, then use of the model to generate insights and then on to paper writing and publication.   I will illustrate my approach using several examples from retailing, apparel manufacturing, spare parts supply chains and demand management. In each of these contexts, the models were inspired by practice but provided their own unique research contributions.

The goal of this talk is to suggest how careful study of applied contexts can serve as a fruitful context for effective research that yields analyzable mathematical models and useful managerial insights.

讲座三:Spare Parts Supply Chain Models at the US Coast Guard

  美国海岸警备队备用件供应链模型研究

  讲座时间:2009年4月3日(周五)9:00—12:00

摘要:For the past seven years, along with colleagues, we have been working on five projects with the US Coast Guard aircraft repair and service center.  The data from these projects have inspired supply chain models that permitted both mathematical analysis as well as interesting insights for practice. We report on two such models.

The first model focuses on the optimal choice of aircraft upgrade and gearbox upgrade in a closed loop supply chain. The model focused on the running upgrade of the HH-65 aircraft at the Coast Guard and involved two closed loop supply chains – one involving aircraft and the other involving gearboxes.  Analysis of the model yields optimal policies for aircraft upgrade and gearbox repair. The associated models apply in contexts where new models have to be phased in while existing models continue to operate. Results from the analysis suggested the value of different implementation policies and yielded managerial insights for other contexts.

The second model focuses on using part age information to adjust repair of broken parts in order to minimize inventory costs.  The model developed first uses linear programming to link repair and inventory databases. Data from this model was then used to estimate the impact of a part age based repair policy implemented in the system.  Analysis of the model generated an approach to identify the optimal signal and ways to maximize the benefit of the signal through use of appropriate repair policies.  Application to data suggested the impact of part type on supply chain benefit. Estimates of the benefit of such policies were used to develop specifications for a supply chain system and develop an estimate of expected cost savings by product type.

The models suggest a role for problem contexts to drive academic research that can yield generalizable insights in supply chain research.
