Abstract

Large-scale industrial projects, such as product development and construction, involve multiple participants who are often from different disciplines, different companies, and, sometimes, different countries. There are two fundamental issues that must be addressed to support such large industrial projects. One is the need for highly efficient and effective infrastructure to support collaborative work, and the other is the need for knowledge, strategies, and methods for project management. While researchers in the fields of computer supported collaborative work (CSCW), knowledge management (KM) and project management (PM) address some aspects of these two issues, integrated views and solutions have been missing. In our research, an agent-based and organizational approach is proposed to achieve intelligent collaborative work and project management with a focus on large-scale collaborative engineering projects. In this approach, intelligent agents associated with human engineers form an agent-community to support engineering collaboration; a project organization model provides a simulation based project design environment for generating best organizing plans and strategies; and a set of process models together with the intelligent agents support smooth execution of the project. In this talk, the background information, agent and organization models, and the current research status will be presented.

Bio:

Dr. Yan Jin is Associate Professor at University of Southern California, Director of USC IMPACT Laboratory, and Visiting Associate Professor at Stanford University. He received his Ph.D. degree in Naval Engineering from the University of Tokyo and has done research on design theory, knowledge-based systems, distributed problem solving, organization modeling, along with their applications to computer integrated manufacturing, collaborative engineering, and project management. Prior to joining USC faculty in the fall of 1996, Dr. Jin worked as a senior research scientist at Stanford University for 5 years. His current research interests include design methodology, agent-based collaborative engineering, project management and computational organization modeling. Listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World, Dr. Jin is a recipient of National Science Foundation CAREER Award (1998), TRW Excellence in Teaching Award (2001), Best Paper in Human Information Systems (5th World Multi-Conference on Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics, 2001), and Xerox Best Paper Award (ASME International Conference on Design Theory and Methodology, 2002).
