主题摘要:Traditional literature in FDI spillovers assumes a unidirectional effect of FDI, either positive or negative, on local industries. In this paper, we propose a general framework that takes into consideration the impacts of spillovers and competition of foreign entrants and local firms onto each other and among themselves, at both the national and regional levels. With annual survey data from China’s National Bureau of Statistics for 1998 through 2004, our results show that the increased presence of more efficient firms, either foreign entrants or restructured local firms, negatively affected the profitability and survival of other firms in a regional market. At the national level, however, the positive spillover effect of efficient firms was evident.
