Stewart is a non-executive director of HSBC Holdings Plc and sits on the investment committee of The Wellcome Trust, an independent charity funding research to improve human and animal health. It is the UK’s largest non-governmental source of funds for biomedical research.
In 2003, he became Chairman of the Real Return Holdings Company Ltd, an investment group focussed on real and absolute returns.
Stewart Newton founded Newton Investment Management in 1977. The business was acquired by Mellon Bank and in September 2000 Stewart stepped down as Chairman and became non-executive, retiring in March 2002.
Prior to setting up Newton Investment Management, Stewart was a partner at Ivory & Sime, Edinburgh. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Touche Ross in the early sixties and then spent five years with Greenwells as an investment analyst.
He is interested in education, health and sport. He sits on the advisory committees of the East Asia Institute at Cambridge University and the Centre for Finance and Investment at Exeter University. He is also involved in the Youth Sports Trust, which supports the education and development of all young people through physical education and sport.
Stewart was born in 1941. He is married with three daughters. He plays real tennis regularly.
