Language and Social Change:  The Example of Globalization

Changes in people’s experience need to be explained so they can be understood.  When this occurs there are often competing explanations and interests behind them, all seeking to influence those affected by the change.  In management scholarship, an increasing interest has developed in such “framing” and “sensemaking” of large-scale developments. 

In this presentation, I take the term “globalization” as an example to show how new terms and concepts are offered to explain social changes.  The term “globalization” was originally presented to explain changes in world finance.  It became more widely used, when selected by different groups to praise or criticize cross-border exchange and adoption of cultures, and labor market and trade practices.  Today’s talk analyzes how the uses of this term changed, as reported in American newspapers.  We may also discuss how the study may be expanded for other nations, to examine the evolution of new terms there as well.

 

Paul Hirsch简介 

Paul Hirsch是西北大学凯洛格管理学院James L. Allen杰出讲座教授,方向为战略与组织管理,现任凯洛格管理学院管理与组织系主任。他同时还是西北大学社会学系以及沟通研究系的成员。

Paul Hirsch在生涯与组织变迁方面著述丰富。他的作品出现在众多的顶尖学术期刊上,近来的作品主要发表在Organization ScienceAmerican Journal of Sociology上。他是第一位提出企业兼并后雇员关系将出现全面改变的学者。1998年他被美国管理学会组织与管理分会选为杰出学者,他还担任美国社会学会“职业、组织与工作”分会的主席。

Paul Hirsch在密西根大学获得博士学位,曾在印地安那大学、芝加哥大学等大学任教。
