Workshop on

THE MARTIME INDUSTYRY IN GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTS: FOCUS ON KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER

Organized by

BIFudan Centre for Chinese and European Business Studies

Fudan University, Shanghai, China, 1 & 2 December 2011

BI – Fudan Centre for Chinese and European Business Studies has been set up by BI Norwegian Business School and Fudan University School of Management, Shanghai, China, to promote research cooperation between Chinese and European scholars. The centre will organize a workshop on the maritime industry in global environments with a special focus on knowledge transfer at Fudan University, Shanghai, China, on 1st and 2nd December 2011.

In the Shanghai region, we see the emergence of a strong maritime cluster. In Europe there are several strong maritime clusters where the important actors are large supply ship owners, shipbuilders, and various ship technology suppliers. A common characteristic of such clusters is a strong business culture, and competence- intensive international oriented firms. The value creation in the cluster is important in a regional, national and international perspective. According to Professor Michael Porter, clusters are important because they are able to create competitive advantage and innovation in a global environment.

Companies in the maritime clusters are a unique base for research into global shipbuilding projects, covering areas such as innovation, economic organization, and knowledge transfer. The global maritime industry, like shipbuilding, ship design and suppliers, also represents an industry that is very well suited for study of global knowledge transfer research.

Concerning transfer of knowledge, transfer within and among organizations has been examined in numerous empirical studies within different industries, but not so much within the maritime industry. In addition to focusing on the maritime industry in general, the workshop will focus on knowledge transfer in innovative shipbuilding projects. In this way the workshop will contribute to the body of empirical project and knowledge management research.

We will welcome the studies on the structure and development of the maritime industry based on different theoretical approaches at the workshop. Especially we will welcome papers on:

-          Chinese and European maritime clusters

-          Transfer of knowledge within the maritime cluster

-          Transfer of knowledge between Chinese units and international maritime firms
