Sir David Bell is Chairman of the Financial Times Group and on the Board of Pearson plc. where he is Director for People. In this role - a first for Pearson - he is responsible to the CEO of Pearson Group and the Board for all the 28,000 people in Pearson with the goal to make the company the best employer in its sector in the world.
As Chairman of the Financial Times Group, David has overall responsibility for the FT, other newspaper and electronic and professional information businesses in the Group.
David, who was educated at Cambridge University and the University of Pennsylvania, joined the FT in 1972. After a spell as Washington correspondent he became news editor of the paper's new International Edition before a period as Assistant Editor (Features) and Managing Editor. In 1989 he became Advertisement Director of the newspaper and in 1993 was appointed Chief Executive of the FT Group. He became Chairman following his appointment as a Director of Pearson in 1996.
David is a Non-Executive Director of The Vitec Group plc, Non-Executive Chairman of The Windmill Partnership, Chairman of Common Purpose Europe, Chairman of the International Youth Foundation, a Patron of the Ambache Chamber Orchestra, and Chairman of the Sadler's Wells Theatre.
