【5月3日】北京:Long-term Effects of Early Childh

【本期主题】Long-term Effects of Early Childhood Malaria Exposure on Education and Health: Evidence from Colonial Taiwan

In the early-1910s, the Japanese colonial government initiated an island-wide malaria eradication campaign in Taiwan, resulting in not only a fast decline in malaria across time but also elimination of disparity in malaria across regions. Exploiting variations in malaria exposure risk around birth arguably caused by the campaign after controlling for other transitional factors, we estimate the effects of early childhood malaria exposure on education and health at older ages. We find that malaria exposure around birth leads to lower life-time educational attainment and, in particular, to worse health outcomes in old age as reflected in worse cognitive function, a higher likelihood of cardiovascular diseases and a higher mortality hazard, compared to those who were not exposed.
