【本期主题】Do Local Industrial Agglomeration and FDI to China enhance the Productivity of Taiwanese Firms?
This paper examines the impacts of industrial agglomeration and foreign direct investment (FDI) on the total factor productivity performances of Taiwanese firms. Our model regarding the FDI decisions of heterogeneous firms with agglomeration economies suggests that firms located in areas with more industrial agglomerations are more productive, while those engaging in FDI may not have a positive influence on firm productivity. Using plant-level data, this paper constructs an indicator of industrial agglomeration to appraise agglomeration economies on firm productivity. Based on the data for 578 manufacturing firms and the agglomeration indicator, we estimate a cross-sectional econometric model to empirically assess the productivity effects of industrial agglomeration and FDI. The empirical results show that local industrial agglomerations exert a positive contribution that may enhance firm productivity, but that FDI in China has no significant effects on firm performance.

报告人简介：
祁玉兰教授于1989年获得美国西北大学经济学博士学位，1998年获台湾清华大学终身教授职位，并于1998—99年在伦敦政治经济学院担任访问学者，曾为台湾清华大学经济系主任，并自2002年起担任《台湾经济预测与政策》杂志的副主编。祁教授的论文主要发表于Contemporary Economic Policy, the Review of International Economics, the Review of Development Economics等顶级期刊上，现在的研究主要集中在产业集群的知识外溢与创新，以及跨国直接投资、产业集聚与企业生产力等领域。
