The development of practical protocols for genetic transfer has deepened the relationship between agricultural R?D and biological science. Professor Buccola and Ms. Xia examine how progress in bioscience is related to progress in agricultural biotechnology. In particular, they study the impacts of research expenditures in U.S. universities on bioscience productivity as measured by the quality-weighted volume of scientific publications. They then examine the influence of university science on agricultural biotechnology patenting activity in the private and public sectors. In so doing, they provide the first rigorous test of the hypothesis that applied agricultural research and basic bioscience are complementary rather than competitive activities.
